Intelligent Distribution Power Router - Medium Size

IDPR-50/50

Overview

The Intelligent Distribution Power Router (IDPR) is a power electronic device. Connecting it in parallel with the low volt-age grid that provides power quality improvement: active compensation of current harmonic, reactive power and unbalance on the current demand side. At the same time, it can integrate an energy storage system, such as a battery system. Also active and reactive power can be dispatched be-cause of its 4-quadrant operation.

A normal operation mode is conceived to convert the entire system downstream to an aggregated bidirectional load that can be regulated in order to match the upstream requirements of the system operator in terms of stability and energy management. This is how the IDPR is aimed to be a powerful element to integrate distributed generation, renewables sources, domestic or industrial loads or electric vehicles. Moreover, it offers the possibility to apply several flexibility services such as short-term congestion management and voltage/reactive power control, day ahead and intraday portfolio optimization, self-balancing and peak shaving power control .

In case of grid failure or a scheduled disconnection, the IDPR is able to restore the low voltage grid in isolated mode. The grid-disconnected operation provides a voltage reference to the system in order to supply loads, distributed generation and/or storage systems.

The control system of the IDPR is managed by the system operator setpoints as well as a permanent monitoring of the power flow up-stream and downstream of its coupling point

Main features

Application and usage

The IDPR enables new services and applications in order to integrate into the distribution system the new distributed renewable generation and electrical vehicles. Some examples of these services related to DSO's activity or industrial electric consumers are:

  • Avoid congestion and over/under voltages issues in the low voltage grid integrating an embedded storage systems in order to defer the network investments.
  • Regulate the voltage level in the grid exchanging reactive power to maintain it within the regulated limits.
  • Ensuring power quality and reduce electrical loses caused by reactive power excess, phase unbalances and harmonic consumptions.
  • Reduce the transport losses and inefficient generation by maximizing local renewable generation and managing storage to allow a local energy consumption.
  • Mitigate the impact derived from an electrical fault and assuring continuity of supply creating an isolated grid.
